Leon County Summer Youth Participants attended their first Civic Engagement Event and it was is well received. On Friday, June 17, 2016 the Summer Youth Program Participants helped set up for the "Build Your Bucket" event. Before doing so they took two tours. One being the Emergency Management Service Department and the other being the American Red Cross. Students learned helpful information on being prepared and what an individual can do to help their family members prepare. After the tours, the VolunteerLeon team leaders gave presentations on what to have in your preparedness kit, students then helped organize supplies and helped put together American Red Cross bags with personal hygiene items inside such as shampoo, conditioner, tooth brushes, and soap. All these activities lead up to the event the following day. On Saturday, June 18, 2016 various vendors and organizations came in to assist with the "Build Your Bucket" event. The vendors and organizations came with information pamphlets on disaster preparedness as well as different supplies. Families from all over came to the event, Emergency preparedness team estimates that approximately 830 people attended. As the doors opened families poured into the American Red Cross starting on their projects. While parents were creating their family buckets kids were in the next room. Children had their own project which was the pillowcase project. Pillowcases were donated from Disney and children filled them with supplies as well. While people were inside, outdoors the Salvation Army also gave away food and supplies. The event turned out to be very successful, but it could not have been done without the various vendors and organizations that came out to help.
