Who We Are

YMCA READS! is a grant funded program under the YMCA and DOE

Responsibilities and Activities:

  • Teach basic reading skills using lessons developed by the YMCA READS! Coordinator using the Systematic Instruction in Phoneme Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS) program.
  • Help a child enhance comprehension, vocabulary, and learn that reading can be fun using the AfterSchool KidzLit curriculum, which builds vocabulary and teaches vital comprehension strategies
  • Be a positive role model and mentor
  • Assist in student supervision, help maintain order, and positively reinforce “good choices” when appropriate
  • Maintain necessary paper work:  volunteer sign in and out logs
  • Help the coordinator with snack set up and dismissal procedures
  • Review and practice lessons for each tutoring session

What We Do

We provide free reading tutoring for the lowest quartile readers in grades K-3 at a Title 1 Tallahassee elementary school. Volunteers don't just tutor students in reading, but are also role models: providing respectful and positive interactions with kids.
